AMA’s Core purpose

An organization’s statement of core purpose captures its fundamental reason for being. Since its founding in 1847 by a group of physicians concerned about advancing the quality of medical education, science, and medical practice, the American Medical Association’s core purpose has been:

To promote the science and art of medicine and the betterment of public health.

The Board of Trustees and Senior Management concur that this timeless statement continues to capture and define the reason for our existence. The AMA will continue to carry this core purpose forward into the new millennium. Improving medicine and the health of the public will always be the focus of what we do.
